Pfizer has cut a controversial patent medicine by six times, the country's top drug court ruled yesterday.
The UK judge ruled that the patent for Pfizer's drug Viagra, approved by the FDA, is invalid.
The drug, the first licensed under the patent to Pfizer for erectile dysfunction, was pulled from the market following the US Food and Drug Administration's decision to block its sales. The judge also ruled that the patent is invalid.
Pfizer and Eli Lilly, the company that manufactures the drug, have also moved to exclude the patent for the erectile dysfunction drug from the US patent for the same reasons, Pfizer said.
Pfizer, which is based in Indianapolis, is facing an appeal by the US and European court against the decision to exclude the patent.
The US ruling follows a US Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that the drug's patent is invalid under the Hatch-Waxman Act, which provides for patents covering the same process that enabled the invention.
The patent for Viagra was pulled from the market after the drug's patent was challenged in a US Food and Drug Administration application filed by USPTO, a group of pharmaceutical companies.
